Cathkin uses a house system the school is split into five these are:
James Aiton Primary, Cairns Primary, Cathkin Primary, Hallside Primary, Loch Primary, West Coats Primary.
Cathkin High School follows the standard grades and national qualifications program provided by the SQA. Pupils will sit standard grade Mathematics and English at the beginning of S3 alongside five subjects of their own choice also at standard grade level until sitting their exams in S4. In S5 pupils have the choice to sit up to five highers or intermediates in various subjects and then sit a further four highers in S6 or up to three advanced highers.
Scottish folk singer Adam McNaughton was a teacher of English at the now-defunct Rutherglen Academy, and later at Cathkin High School. Also a former pupil of Cathkin High school Duncan Weir, who now plays professional rugby for the Glasgow Warriors.
